A special education teacher works with children who have a variety of disabilities, both mental and physical. Many special education teachers are under heavy stress because of heavy workloads and administrative tasks. Special education teachers must generate a substantial amount of paperwork that documents each student’s progress and work to provide documentation to show parents who feel their children are not receiving sufficient education. The high physical and emotional strain of the job can force some special education teachers to leave the profession. Some special education jobs offer year-round schooling for special education students, but in general most special education teachers work a 10-month school year.
Overview
Special education programs are offered at colleges and universities across the nation at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degree levels. Special education teachers acquire longer training compared to general education teachers. Most bachelor's degrees for special education include general and specialized courses in special education. An increasing number of colleges and universities are requiring special education students to do a 5th year to attain a master's degree in special education, or to pursue other graduate-level preparation. Special education schools offer courses such as, child growth & development, educational psychology, legal issues of special education, and strategies for teaching students with disabilities. Depending on the type of degree, the special education program will offer generalized courses, or specialized courses. In the last year of obtaining a special education degree is spent student teaching in a classroom supervised by a certified teacher. All States require special education teachers to be licensed.
