To become a public relations specialist, one must acquire a public relations degree.  A public relations education will provide the education one needs to learn writing skills, speech giving, and crisis management to name a few courses in the public relations program. With a public relations education, one will serve as a promoter for businesses, hospitals, nonprofit associations, universities, and other organizations, and build and maintain positive relations with the public. Public relations programs have specific courses designed for a public relations degree.

Public relations training allows for one to comprehend how to handle organizational functions such mediating with the community, consumer, media, industry, and governmental relations; political campaigns; interest-group representation; conflict mediation; employee and investor relations, as well as other public relations services. A public relations degree usually consists of a degree in a communication, journalism, or advertising.

A public relations degree enables one to work for an organization or a PR firm. In addition to in-house public relations, PR firms specialize in handling relationships between client's publics out of house. After receiving a public relations degree one can work in PR in and/or out of house.  After receiving a public relations education, one will understand the pro's and con's for both in house and out of house PR.

Public relations training can be overwhelming at times.  The fast paced nature of the profession creates hectic office work environments. Public relations training will prepare one for the pressures of impending deadlines and strict work schedules can be very traumatic. With a public relations degree a typical work week is 35- to 40-hour week. It is common to be unpaid overtime with work schedules being irregular and frequently interrupted. With a public relations education one should expect to be on call or be at the job at all hours of the day, particularly in the case of an emergency of crisis situation. Public relations training can give a guide for how to work in a crisis. With a public relations degree one should expect to travel. Schedules often have to be rearranged so that workers can meet deadlines, deliver speeches, attend meetings and community activities.
