The child development education, from child development schools, training and qualifications required of child care workers vary broadly. Each State has its own licensing requirements that regulate child development programs and child development schools. These necessities range from a high school diploma, a national Child Development Associate (CDA) credential to community college courses or a child development college degree in child development education. Childcare workers generally can attain some form of employment with a high school diploma and little or no experience, but certain private firms and publicly funded have more demanding child development programs. Some employers may prefer workers who have completed secondary or postsecondary child development programs and early childhood education or who have work experience in a child care setting. Other employers require their own specialized child development education training. A progressive number of employers expect an associate degree in early or childhood development education, from one of many child development schools. Furthermore, child care workers may need to be trained in first aid and CPR and receive continuous child development education on topics of health and safety.
